Background: Wulai was originally an Atayal aborigine village, its name meaning hot and poisonous. There has always been natural hot springs in Wulai, but much of that water has been channeled into hotels and public bathhouses. The free hot springs stood at the bottom of the hill next to the river, and was a collection of used hot spring water from the hotels and paid hot springs above. In its prime, it boasted the largest free outdoor hot springs in Taiwan. Recently the District of Wulai in New Taipei has become a major tourist attraction, partly because of its close proximity to Taipei. It has museums, waterfalls, a gondola, a train, an old street night market, and most of all hot springs. The main delicacies on the old street are Taiwan ingenuous foods such as wild boar meat and rice steamed in bamboo. Wulai waterfall is 80 meters high, making it the highest waterfall in northern Taiwan. It's highest point sits at 230 meters above sea level, and drops to 150 meters above sea level. The waterfall is also about 10 meters wide. Yunceng Amusement Park began construction in 1960 and was completed in 1970. It includes a gondola, hotel, swimming pool, canoe pond, and other activities. Originally it had a roller coaster, pirate ship, and other rides, but these have all been taken down. Yilan International Children's Folklore and Folkgame Festival (宜è˜åœ‹éš›ç«¥çŽ©è—術節) is one of the largest children's festivals in Taiwan, occurring every year during summer break along the Dongshan River in Yilan. It features a large outdoor waterpark as well as musical performances, exhibitions, games, and cultural events. It has become a yearly tradition for many families in northern Taiwan.

Background: The festival first began in 1996 and has continued every year, except for 2008-2009 due to lack of funds, in 2003 because of SARS, and in 2020 due to COVID. The completion of the Hsueshan Tunnel in 2006 made it much easier for large amounts of people to travel quickly from Taipei to Yilan. The large event attracts many visitors from Taipei. During summer weekdays and weekends the venue can be expected to be totally packed with visitors. Background: The sandstone that forms the Yehliu Formation was created between 10 and 20 million years ago and was pushed out of the sea along with northern Taiwan thousands of years ago. The Queen's head is formed by two layers of sandstone, one soft eroding layer on the bottom and a harder layer on top. This kind of sandstone formation can be seen around the world and is known as a hoodoo. The Queen's head was named after Queen Elizabeth I because it is thought to look like her. The head is eroding .2 to .5 CM per year and is expected to fall at any time! The name "Yehliu" comes from the Spanish name for the area "Putno Diablos" which was then also used by the Dutch, and transliterated by the Chinese settlers in the area as "Yehliu" in Chinese. When is Tomb Children’s Day in Taiwan? April 4th every year. Usually, it is usually combined with the Tomb Sweeping Holiday to make a four-day national holiday extended weekend. Shuangxi Riverside Park and Bikeway in Shilin District of Taipei City is a great place to cycle and enjoy the riverside scenery. Other activities in the park include basketball, skating, badminton, and other sports. It also connects to Taipei Children's Amusement Park 兒童新樂園 Értóng xīn lèyuán). If you love to cycle, this is definitely a place you should stop to visit.
Background: The bike path is roughly 2 kilometers long, and runs on both sides of the Waishuang River between Zhishan Park and Waishuangxi Marina. The left bank of Shuangxi Riverside Park is open and spacious, while the right bank is densely shaded with trees. Seven bridges span the park. The Shuangxi bike path includes bike paths on both sides of the The bike path past Wenchang Bridge has a small gap, requiring a detour across the road. This section of the embankment road was used as a filming location for the idol drama Evil Girl Ah Chu 惡女阿楚. The bike path is usually not very crowded even on weekends. The Miramar Mall in Dazhi, Zhongshan District of Taipei, is the largest shopping mall in northern Taiwan, with a distinctive giant Ferris wheel on top of it. Here you can shop, eat at restaurants, enjoy a movie, and much more. It is definitely worth a stop on your next trip to Taipei.
Background: Miramar Mall opened in 2004. Before it was built, the area where it stands was once the Keelung River, which was rerouted, and the land here was reclaimed in the early 2000s. At the time, it was the largest building project on top of the new reclaimed land near the Keelung River. It is the largest shopping mall in northern Taiwan and has the fourth largest Ferris Wheel in Taiwan at 80 meters tall, 120 meters off the ground level. The Taipei Museum of Drinking Water is both a children's water park and a museum of tap water engineering dating back to the Japanese Era. It is definitely worth a visit on your next trip to Taipei.
Background: The Water Treatment Facility at the Drinking Water Museum was built in 1908 during the Japanese era to provide drinking water to local residents. The main reason it was built is because so many Japanese soldiers died from disease during the occupation of Taiwan (4,600 disease deaths compared to 164 deaths from war). Waterworks were created to draw water from the Xindian River, purify it, and store it. In addition, infrastructure was built to pump drinking water to the city. Later, the rest of Taiwan's cities also had their drinking water systems modernized. In 1952 and 1974 under the ROC capacity was expanded. In 1977, the old water drawing station was decommissioned. The area was later renovated in 1997 and opened to the public as a museum in 2000. The area is a popular destination, especially in the summer when many parents bring children to play in the splash pool and water slides. Hours: Tuesday to Sunday 9 AM to 5 PM every day. Shuizhiqiu Park is a large park in Guanyin District of Taoyuan. Here you can enjoy a large slide tower with three slides, a maze, swings, and more. It is one of the best parks in northern Taiwan.
Historical Background: Shuizhiqiu Park was completed in 2021. The main feature of this park is the large silo-shaped tower with three slides of differing heights. The tower stands nearly three stories tall. The park also features swing sets, a climbing hill, a maze, many paths and grassy areas, a gravel pit, and restrooms. During heavy rains, the park also acts as a floodwater catchment basin. As of 2024, the pond behind the park (Miao Pond 廟埤) was undergoing renovation. The park is very busy, especially on holidays and weekends. Please note that playing on the tower during off-time hours is prohibited. The Former Taipei Child Amusement Park is an abandoned relic left in central Taipei. Here you can find old buildings, derelict structures, and artifacts from the original Taipei Child Amusement Park's former glory, some of which have been preserved and open for the public to visit.
Please note that this area should not be confused with the (new) Taipei Children's Amusement Park in Shilin, which is in operation. Check out our full blog on that park here. Background: The Former Taipei Child Amusement Park was built by the Japanese in 1937, near the old Yuanshan Zoo. In 1945, it was taken over by Taipei City under the ROC. In 1958 it changed its name to Zhongshan Children's Park because it was located on Zhongshan North Road, and was taken under private management. In 1968, the park was bought back by Taipei City. After the Taipei Zoo moved to Wenshan District in 1986, the extra room became added space for the children's park. In 1991, the name was changed to Taipei Children's Amusement Park. In 2008, the park was moved from its original location to near the Art Center in Shilin District, because an archaeological site was found there and the city wanted to protect the Keelung River. In 2014 the old Children's Amusement Park was closed and the new Amusement Park in Shilin Officially opened. The Taipei Expo Park was created in 2010 for the Taipei International Flora Exhibition which ran from November 2010 to April 2011. It used land from Yuanshan Park, Fine Arts Park, and Xinsheng Park, and Dajia Riverside Park. Before the three parks were built, it was home to the former Taipei Children's Park and former Taipei Yuanshan Zoo, old military housing and military complexes, farmland, and a driver's education course. New Taipei Metropolitan Park in Sanchong and Luzhou Districts is my favorite city park in northern Taiwan. It features long green grass fields, lots of sidewalks and places to rest, as well as rivers and ponds. It's a great place to ride a bike and exercise and relax if you are in the area.
Background: New Taipei Metropolitan Park was first began work in 2008 and it is still undergoing improvements. Originally it's name was "Greater Taipei Metropolitan Park 大臺北都會公園" but its name changed to New Taipei Metropolitan Park 新北都會公園 in 2009 to differentiate it from Taipei City. It sits on the Erchong Floodway, a flood overflow basin which began construction in 1987 and was finished in 1996. Before that, there were no levees here and Sanchong and the surrounding areas were prone to flooding every time a Typhoon hit, due to the rising of the Tamsui River. The area where the Erchong Floodway sits was once the direction that the Tamsui River flowed before this section silted in, diverting the flow of the river north. The park is 7.5 km long, which includes wetlands, grasslands, basketball courts, baseball fields, tennis courts, slides, bicycle paths, and much more. Taipei Children's Amusement Park (in Chinese "New Child's Amusement Park" 兒童新樂園 Értóng xīn lèyuán) is one of the funnest places for Children in Taiwan. Because it is run by Taipei City, the entrance fee is significantly subsidized, meaning you can have a full-blown child amusement park experience for a fraction of the price. If you have kids, this is definitely a place you should stop to visit.

The Taiwan Indigenous Peoples Cultural Park in Machia Township of Pingtung is a large area in southern Taiwan that has traditional aboriginal villages, museums, exhibitions, live performances, artwork, and indigenous cuisine, as well as amazing mountain scenery. If Taiwan's biggest tourism draw is indigenous culture, then this place is a must stop on your trip to Taiwan.
Background: Taiwan Indigenous peoples have inhabited Taiwan for over 10,000 years. After Chinese and Japanese colonialism, they were pushed back mainly to the mountains. There are currently 16 officially recognized tribes, and a population of over 500,000 people, making about 2.5% of Taiwan's population. The Taiwan Indigenous Peoples Cultural Park was established in 1987, and is 82.65 hectares. It includes museums, live shows, and shops showcasing Taiwan Indigenous culture. The park is located in Machia Township of Pingtung, and is nearby Sandimen, a township also know for its indigenous culture. Tours and Activities in Pingtung: There are many activities available in Pingtung, such as snorkeling, diving, SUPing, surfing, submarine riding, and river tracing. I have stayed at many hostels and hotels in Pingtung, and even almost bought a house here. Some places that I have stayed at and can recommend are Nanwan Kiki (book on Agoda here, Booking.com here), a B&B next to Nanwan Bay, Kenting's most popular Beach. There are also a few decent hotels near Kenting Street Night Market like Kenting Star Inn 888 (book on Agoda here, Klook here, or Booking.com here), or Kenting Dajianshan Hotel (book on Agoda here or Booking.com here). You will notice that none of these hotels are five star resorts (I do not come to Kenting to waste my time at a resort, but you can still search Agoda, Booking.com, or Klook here for those) but they are in my opinion the above have the best value for the money. How to Get There: Bus: From Pingtung you can take bus 8232, 8337, or 8233 toward Sandimen but it is about a 20 minute walk from the bus stop.
