When should you go to Taipei? In my opinion, the best weather in Taipei is from March-May, and October - November, when the temperatures stay around 26 degrees Celsius and there is not as much rain. Summers are also nice, with the most sunny weather, but also hot and rainy. Winters can be cold (but not below freezing) and usually wet. Overall, there is no wrong answer as to what time of year you should visit Taipei. You will have a great time here at any time of year. The Puppetry Art Center of Taipei is a museum celebrating the art of puppetry in Taiwan (台北偶戲館 英文介紹). The museum is located in Songshan District of Taipei and is accessible via Nanjing Sanmin MRT station. Usually, there are not many people visiting, and there are many interactive displays for children who can even make their own puppet show here.

History In 1998, Lin Jing-fu, the chairman of the Taiyuan Art and Culture Foundation, donated his personal collection of puppets. The Taipei City Government’s Department of Cultural Affairs then decided to build the Taipei Puppet Theater Museum on land donated as part of Wei Ching Group’s community feedback plan for the Living Mall area. The site opened on August 7th, 2004. The museum includes areas for glove puppetry, shadow puppetry, marionette theater, special exhibitions, backstage music, and a master workshop for national treasures. Yilan International Children's Folklore and Folkgame Festival (宜è˜åœ‹éš›ç«¥çŽ©è—術節) is one of the largest children's festivals in Taiwan, occurring every year during summer break along the Dongshan River in Yilan. It features a large outdoor waterpark as well as musical performances, exhibitions, games, and cultural events. It has become a yearly tradition for many families in northern Taiwan.

Background: The festival first began in 1996 and has continued every year, except for 2008-2009 due to lack of funds, in 2003 because of SARS, and in 2020 due to COVID. When is Tomb Children’s Day in Taiwan? April 4th every year. Usually, it is usually combined with the Tomb Sweeping Holiday to make a four-day national holiday extended weekend. However, if April 4 coincides with the Tomb Sweeping Holiday, the holiday is observed on April 3. If it falls on a Thursday, the holiday is moved to the following day. The Taipei Zoo is not only the largest and most varied zoo in Taiwan, it is also one of the best zoos in Asia, and at the same time has an extremely affordable price of only 60 NT per adult. Background: The Taipei City Zoo was originally established during the Japanese Era in 1914 near the Yuanshan Hotel. After the ROC took control of Taiwan, elephants, lions, and bears were added to the zoo in 1952. Because there was not enough land to expand the zoo, it was moved to Wenshan District in 1986. Two employees have been killed by animals, one from an elephant and one from a black bear both in the 1970s. There have been no fatalities at the zoo since. The Maokong Gondola was built next to the zoo in 2007, connecting Taipei Zoo with Maokong. The current zoo includes a Taiwan indigenous animal exhibit, children's petting zoo, tropical rain forest exhibit, desert animal exhibit, Australian and African animal exhibits, tropical animal exhibit, petting zoo, insect exhibit, and bird exhibit. There is also indoor Panda exhibit, insect exhibit, amphibian and reptile exhibit, koala exhibit, and penguin exhibit. Hours: 9 AM to 5 PM, tickets are not sold after 4:00 PM. As a foreigner in Taiwan, if you have preschool-aged children it could be a stressful experience to try to find an appropriate place for your child to go to school. Luckily foreign children have some priority when it comes to the public preschool lottery. Also, some preschools also have government subsidies. In this blog, we will give you a general overview of the preschool system in Taiwan.
Please note that the below information is only a general overview and details may vary for each school. I am giving this advice based on my experience as a foreign parent of two children who have gone through preschool in Taiwan. The numbers below were taken from the government website. For the latest information, please check the government website. Taiwan monthly child stipend for children 5 and under: 5歲幼兒就學補助 First, let me start off by telling you that there is a monthly stipend for children of Taiwan citizen parents who are aged 5 and under, and are not enrolled in preschool. For the first child, the stipend is 5,000 NT, for the second child 6,000, and for the third child, it is 7,000. When to go: The best time to go they say is anytime! There is always a part of Taiwan that is great to visit at any given time of year. However, most areas are most comfortable around May when it is not too hot and there are no northeasterly winds or typhoons. The typhoon season lasts from around June to October. The tourist busy season is during summer break from June to August, during which time it can be hard to book a hostel or airplane ticket. Winter is the less crowded season, but the water will be colder, there will be constant wind (which could cancel transportation), and it will rain more often. The Museum of World Religions was established in 2001 by Buddhist Monk Hsin Tao (心道) and the Ling Jiou Mountain Buddhist Foundation in Gongliao District of New Taipei near Fulong. The Lingjiu monastery was started by a former ROC soldier who fought against the PRC in Burma during the 1960s. He then retired near Shuangxi and started this monastery. His religion is now international, has raised tons of money, and also owns two monasteries. The interior design and exhibition planning were led by the renowned U.S. design firm Ralph Appelbaum Associates, with Dr. Laurence Sullivan of Harvard University’s Center for the Study of World Religions spearheading the development of the religious exhibition content. Through its collections, exhibitions, activities, research, and publications, the museum aims to showcase the power and uniqueness of religions while fostering a shared understanding of world religions among visitors. Guandu Wharf (關渡碼頭, aka Lingshan Temple) is a popular riverside area in Beitou District of Taipei. Along with a bike path with beautiful wildlife and river scenery, there is a ferry terminal and a small night market to check out. Historical Background: Guandu was originally known as Gantoumen 干豆門 (literally dried beans gate). Positioned with Guanyin Mountain and Datun Mountain behind it and facing the Tamsui River, it became a crucial port due to its strategic location. In the early days, settlers arrived in northern Taiwan through Guandu Wharf to establish their homes and cultivate the land, leading to the early development of the area. However, over time, sediment build-up at the mouths of the Keelung and Tamsui Rivers caused a decline in water transportation. Guandu Wharf sits adjacent to Guandu Nature Park and Guandu Temple. On holidays and in the evenings, visitors frequently stroll and relax around the wharf. Lihe Eco Park is a small park built on a hill near Liuzhangli in Da'an District of Taipei. The park connects to Fushoushan Park and has swings, slides, hiking trails, and great views of the brown line MRT. It is definitely a spot worth visiting in Taipei.
History: Lihe Eco Park was built over an old mountain village and the Daan Cemetary No. 8 gravesite in the area, which were demolished in 2017 to protect people from a potential landslide. After the land was reclaimed by the government, the area was converted into an Eco Park with native plant gardens including Chinese tallow trees, fringetrees, and chinaberry trees. A memorial was also created for the former residents on the hillside. The park is usually not crowded due to its distance from the nearest MRT station. Taipei Expo Park is a huge area in northern Taipei that encompasses three separate parks: Yuanshan Park, Fine Arts Park, and Xinsheng Park. Near the Fine Arts Park, you can visit the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Taipei Expo Dome, Lin Ai-tai Historic House, and the Yuanshan Villa (former Taipei Story House). Within Xinsheng Park, one can also find the Taipei Collectible Botanical Garden, Garden Maze, and the Taipei Rose Garden. It is a great place to spend an afternoon and a must-stop in Taipei.
Background: The Taipei Expo Park was created in 2010 for the Taipei International Flora Exhibition which ran from November 2010 to April 2011. Maokong is only one of a few Gondolas in Taiwan, but it is the most accessible. You can get there via the Taipei MRT. After embarking on the Gondola, you can view grand vistas of Southern Taipei, and then explore the mountainous streets of Maokong, which has tea shops, street food, restaurants, temples, hiking trails, and great views.
Background: The Maokong Gondola was completed in 2007 to improve transportation to Maokong, a tea growing area in Southern Wenshan District of Taipei City. Before, the district could only be reached by small mountain roads. The Gondola was closed from 2008-2010 due to Typhoon damage. Popular activities in the area include tea drinking, hiking, and picture taking. There are four stations on the Gondola: Taipei Zoo Station, Taipei Zoo South Station, Zhinan Temple Station, and Maokong Station. A one way trip takes 12 minutes, and gondola cars which can fit up to eight people (five people in glass cars) come every few seconds. Maokong gets its name from the eroded holes in the rocks around the area; the name literally means “Cat Hole.” The area has been one of the largest areas for tea production in Taipei since the Qing Dynasty. After the completion of the Gondola in 2007, tourists to the area have increased significantly. Shuizhiqiu Park is a large park in Guanyin District of Taoyuan. Here you can enjoy a large slide tower with three slides, a maze, swings, and more. It is one of the best parks in northern Taiwan.
Historical Background: Shuizhiqiu Park was completed in 2021. The main feature of this park is the large silo-shaped tower with three slides of differing heights. The tower stands nearly three stories tall. The park also features swing sets, a climbing hill, a maze, many paths and grassy areas, a gravel pit, and restrooms. During heavy rains, the park also acts as a floodwater catchment basin. As of 2024, the pond behind the park (Miao Pond 廟埤) was undergoing renovation. The park is very busy, especially on holidays and weekends. Please note that playing on the tower during off-time hours is prohibited. TaiMall Park is a fun playground and park in front of TaiMall in Luzhu District of Taoyuan, built in 2020. Here you can enjoy a large jungle gym area, climbing areas, slides, swings, a skating rink, basketball courts, and more. You can also check out the nearby TaiMall shopping area.
Historical Background: TaiMall was completed in 1999, and was the first large-scale mall built in Taiwan. TaiMall Park was built in 2020, and includes 13 swing sets, and slides 15 meters high, a 10 meter high climbing dome, a basketball court, a circular plaza, flower gardens, grassy areas, and a skating rink. The main feature of the park is a custom-made three-story giant dome climbing net slide imported from South Korea, where visitors can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of the park from the platform before sliding down a 15-meter slide. The total cost for the park was 80 million NT. The land where the park was built was originally owned by TaiMall, but was given to the Taoyuan City Government, however TaiMall still maintains the grounds. Baiyun Park is one of the most fun places for kids in East Taipei. With nine slides in total, as well as Taiwan's first circular swing set, a large sand pit, and a rock climbing area, this park has some of the best modern equipment around and simply beats out other parks in the area.

Background: Baiyun Park was completed in 2018 and is named after Baiyun Elementary School next door. This area of Xizhi, especially the mountain area is also known as Baiyun. We made a blog about Baiyun Police Station here. Before the Dakeng River Levee was built about 40 years ago, the area where Baiyun Park is located was part of the Dakeng River. Liufu and Xingfu Parks on the other side of the Levee were once also part of the Dakeng Riverbed. Baiyun Park was the first park in Taiwan with a circular swing set. Another unique feature is the paper airplane-shaped shading below the slides. Since its inception, Baiyun Park has been known as the funnest park around. Shanshuilu Eco Park (aka Shanshui Green Eco Park) in Nangang District of Taipei is a large grassy park with one of the best views in Taipei City, built over a former landfill. Here you can find beautiful mountain scenery, a large playground, ziplines, a sand pit, a reading room, and lots of large grassy areas. It is one of the most popular parks in Taipei City.
Background: Shanshuilu Eco Park was built over the Shanzhuku Landfill and opened to the public in 2013. The park is 21 hectares and it is the largest park in Nangang. The Shanzhuku Valley once had steep terrain, and used to be used for orchards and farmland. However, since about 1970, the valley was slowly filled in with landfill and a recycling plant, acting as Taipei City's main landfill site. Garbage stopped being collected after the site was filled to capacity in 2004, and the site was used as a recycling site until 2010. After 2010, it was decided to turn the site into a park. Behind the park, part of the landfill is still in use and has renewed its permit until 2030 or until the site fills. The park features a small library and classroom, bathrooms, slides, two sand pits, ponds, bike paths, large grassy areas, an amphitheater, swings, trampolines, and zip-lines. Because of its large size and fun equipment, it is especially popular for families with small children and parking will usually get totally full on weekends with good weather. Guanshan Riverside Park is one of the best parks along the Keelung River in Taipei. Here you can find a bicycle practice loop, a zip line, trampolines, a sand pit, swings, a dog park, bike lanes, and large grassy areas. Also, the park is a great place for plane spotting as it sits right next to Songshan Airport. There is something here for everyone.
Background: Guanshan Riverside Park was formed around the year 2000 when the Keelung Riverside area was improved with levees. In 2023, a Wazaikeng Children's Park was formed inside Guanshan Riverside Park and includes a zip line, a sand pit, and swings. The area is popular with cyclists and plane spotters and can get busy on the weekends. Nangang Park is one of the most pleasant parks in Taipei. It features two large natural ponds, a large grassy area, a large children's play area, a jogging track, hiking trails, tennis courts, and much more. There are also amazing views of the nearby mountains, Taipei City, and the 101 tower. It is definitely worth a stop if you are in the area.
Background: Nangang Park was originally called "Houshanpi 後山埤" which MRT Houshanpi Station on the blue line is named after, and literally means "the lake behind the hill." There are two other lakes in Nangang nearby, one is down the street from the park called Dongxinpi 東新埤, and the other one is accessible from Academia Sinica called Sanchongpupi 三重埔埤. The three lakes are home to waterfowl and other wildlife. Originally Houshanpi was one lake but was later split into two because of silting. Nangang Park was established in 1987 around the natural Houshanpi Lake/Pond. The pond also acts as a flood control system. The park is usually not very busy but you will see a lot of people here during nice weather and on weekends and holidays. Daan Forest Park (aka Da'an Forest Park) is the most busy park in Taipei City. Built over a former military dependents village, it was meant to resemble Central Park in New York, and is considered the “lungs of Taipei.” You can also find lots of green space, ponds, and wildlife here. It is a great place to relax and connect with nature in the middle of the big city.
Background: The area where the park stands now was first designated as parkland in 1932 by the Japanese as part of their urban planning for the city of Taipei. After the ROC took control of Taiwan, there were many KMT military servicemen and their families who needed a place to stay, and the park served as a temporary place to build rudimentary housing for them. The military dependents villages built here were called Jianhua New Village (建華新村), Yuelu New Village (岳盧新村), and many other illegal structures built by Mainland Chinese people following the KMT to Taiwan. At its peak, the area housed a few thousand people comprising four neighborhoods. Plans to remake the land as a park began in 1956, but were delayed by debate about whether to remake the area as a forest park or have a recreational building. In 1989, it was finally decided to make a forest park. In 1992, the buildings on the land were demolished, and the park was opened to the public in 1994. The park can get very busy on weekends. The Keelung Marine Science Museum (國立海洋科技博物館) is a former power plant that has been converted into a museum and IMAX Theater. It also features many educational exhibits about Taiwan's sea life and marine science. It is definitely worth a stop during your next trip to Keelung.

Background: The sandstone and sedimentary that forms the Badouzi formations were created between 10 and 20 million years ago, and was pushed out of the sea along with northern Taiwan thousands of years ago. The rock formations formed by easily eroding sandstone, by the sea and waves. The area around Chaojing Park was a protected military base and garbage dunmp, after which civilians were allowed to freely visit. Kite flying is also a popular activity at the park.
