Daan Forest Park (aka Da'an Forest Park) is the most busy park in Taipei City. Built over a former military dependents village, it was meant to resemble Central Park in New York, and is considered the “lungs of Taipei.” You can also find lots of green space, ponds, and wildlife here. It is a great place to relax and connect with nature in the middle of the big city.
Background: The area where the park stands now was first designated as parkland in 1932 by the Japanese as part of their urban planning for the city of Taipei. After the ROC took control of Taiwan, there were many KMT military servicemen and their families who needed a place to stay, and the park served as a temporary place to build rudimentary housing for them. The military dependents villages built here were called Jianhua New Village (建華新村), Yuelu New Village (岳盧新村), and many other illegal structures built by Mainland Chinese people following the KMT to Taiwan. At its peak, the area housed a few thousand people comprising four neighborhoods. Plans to remake the land as a park began in 1956, but were delayed by debate about whether to remake the area as a forest park or have a recreational building. In 1989, it was finally decided to make a forest park. In 1992, the buildings on the land were demolished, and the park was opened to the public in 1994. The park can get very busy on weekends. The Keelung Marine Science Museum (國立海洋科技博物館) is a former power plant that has been converted into a museum and IMAX Theater. It also features many educational exhibits about Taiwan's sea life and marine science. It is definitely worth a stop during your next trip to Keelung.

Background: The sandstone and sedimentary that forms the Badouzi formations were created between 10 and 20 million years ago, and was pushed out of the sea along with northern Taiwan thousands of years ago. The rock formations formed by easily eroding sandstone, by the sea and waves. The area around Chaojing Park was a protected military base and garbage dunmp, after which civilians were allowed to freely visit. Kite flying is also a popular activity at the park. The Taipei Astronomical Museum is insightful, fun, and amazing. It has the biggest planetarium I have ever seen and up-to-date scientific information about the cosmos and new discoveries. It also contains a roller coaster ride and a theater. It is definitely worth a trip for the whole family.
Background: In 1938, the Japanese Daily News Paper donated a telescope on one of Taipei's local buildings. After 1945, it was renamed the Taipei City Observatory. The Taipei Astronomical Museum was built in 1996, taking over from the previous Taipei City Observatory. The new building includes a museum area, a theater, a roller coaster (cosmic adventure), and an observatory. The observatory includes two telescopes and is used for research purposes only, and is usually not open to the public. The museum is a popular place for families and children and can get quite crowded on weekends. Su'ao's Crayon Castle (officially Luck Arts Crayon Factory) is a crayon factory castle in Su'Ao township in Yilan County, that has been specifically designed as a DIY experience center for kids where they can make their own arts and crafts, as well as their own set of markers, and crayon in the shape of Taiwan! The DIY activities include making markers and crayons, face painting, painting porcelain, making chalk, and water coloring. Basically, it is a paradise for young children.
Background: The Lucky Art corporation started in Yilan in 1990, and has four factories worldwide, two in Taiwan, and one in Shanghai and Vietnam. The factory in Yilan produces over 1.5 million crayons per day. In 2008, the Lucky Art corporation opened its tourist crayon factory, which now sees more than 200,000 visitors per year. In 2017, the crayon castle was expanded to double its size, and added a parking lot that can accommodate over 200 cars. The Miniatures Museum of Taiwan was the first miniature museum in Asia, and with 200 items is the second largest miniature museum in the world. The collection includes Medieval architecture, Disney characters, doll houses, scenes from fairytales, and more. It is definitely worth a stop for miniature enthusiasts everywhere.
Background: Taiwan's miniature museum was founded in 1997 by Mr. Lin Wen-ren (林文仁) and his wife, who had amassed a large private collection for their children before planning to make a museum. The Miniatures Museum of Taiwan was the first miniature museum in Asia, and with 200 items is the second largest miniature museum in the world. Hsinchu Zoo is the oldest zoo in Taiwan and is the third-largest public zoo in the country. Admission here is only 50 NT and includes over 300 animals such as tigers, bears, hippos, monkeys, ostriches, emus, goats, and more. It is definitely worth a stop on your next trip to Hsinchu.
Background: The Hsinchu Zoo was first established during the Japanese era in 1935 as part of a child's amusement park. During WWII, the animals in the zoo were moved to the Yuanshan Zoo in Taipei. The Hsinchu Zoo was then reopened after the war in 1953. The zoo later underwent renovations and expansions in 1960, 1971, and 1982. The zoo was also closed for two years for renovations between 2017 and 2019. Now it is a popular attraction visited mainly by local residents.
