Background: "Linshanbi is a cape located next to Baishawan (White Sand Bay) to the west of Fuguei Cape, which is the northernmost point of Taiwan. It rises about 30 meters above the sea. Kike Fuguei Cape, Linshanbi has an abundance of andesite, evidence of volcanic eruption in the distant past. A circular rock formation at the northern edge of the cape looks natural but is actually a fish trap built by fishermen in early times. Fish and shrimp that enter the trap at high tide are captured in the trap when the tidal waters recede, leaving a wide variety of marine life for viewing fish, shrimp, crabs, snails, chitons, and anemones. Zhongjiao Bay (aka Zhongjiaowan 中角灣, or Zhongjiao Shazhu Wan 中角沙珠灣) is a long sandy beach in Jinshan District of New Taipei, known as the most popular surfing location in Northern Taiwan. It is popular for surfing and swimming, and nearby there are also hikes, interesting rock formations, and the nearby Jinshan Old Street and Jinshan Hot Springs. It is definitely a relaxing place to spend an afternoon. Nearby you can also find other sandy beaches such as Jinshan Beach and Xialiao Beach.

Background: The first people to live in the Jinshan Area were plains indigenous peoples. The name "Jinabaoli" comes from the Chinese transliteration of the indigenous name of the place. Chinese people began to settle here during the late Ming Dynasty, coming mainly from Fujian, and even more came to settle here during the Qing Dynasty. During the Japanese occupation of Taiwan, a road was built to connect Jinshan to Keelung and Tamsui, making it easier for people to visit. Haiweizi is a small beach along the coast in Tamsui. Once there was a bike path here, but it was damaged by wave action, so no one is allowed on the south side of the beach. It is usually devoid of people and is a nice place for a stroll.

Sandiaojiao Lighthouse (三貂角燈塔), also known as the Santiago Cape Lighthouse, marks the easternmost point on Taiwan's mainland. You cannot go inside, but you can enjoy the views from the top of the hill there and the museum inside. Overall, it is a great place to relax and enjoy the coastal views nearby.

Background: The area around Fulong was originally inhabited by the Basay indigenous tribe who has a village and hunting grounds there. In 1626, the Spanish landed near Fulong and renamed the location Santiago (transliterated from Taiwanese as Sandiao 三貂, as in Sandiao Cape). After the Qing colonized Taiwan, many Fujianese fisherman relocated to the area and began to build the iconic stone houses you can see today. The Old Caoling Tunnel was built in 1924 during the Japanese occupation of Taiwan, and is 2,167 meters long. At the time it was built, it was the longest tunnel in Taiwan. The tunnel took 3 years to build due to delays from Malaria, remoteness of the location, and digging accidents killing 11 people and injuring over 300. The tunnel was only one lane wide, too narrow for electric trains, and so was decommissioned in 1985 and lay waste for 22 years. The tunnel was reopened when the Coaling Bicycle Loop was created in 2007, using the old Caoling Tunnel as its main looping point. Sandiaojiao Lighthouse (三貂角燈塔), also known as the Santiago Cape Lighthouse, built in 1935 by the Japanese. You cannot go inside, but you can enjoy the views from the top of the hill there and the museum inside. The Fulong-Coaling-Sandiao Cape- bike route is one of the most biker friendly routes in Taiwan, the roughly 2 hour loop is something that the whole family can enjoy. It includes a 2KM ride through the Old Coaling Railroad Tunnel, as well as a ride along the Sandiao Cape coast on an enclosed bike path, where one can enjoy great views of the ocean, Turtle Island, wavy geological features on the coastline, and historical stone villages along the way. Background: Fugui Cape (aka Fuguei Cape, Cape Fugui, or Cape Fukwei) was formed roughly 800,000 years ago by volcanoes spewing lava into the ocean creating Fuigui Cape. Later coral grew near the shoreline, which makes up for most of the white sand seen on the nearby beaches today at Baishawan Beach and Laomei Beach. The cape extends about one kilometer north into the Taiwan Strait, forming the Strait's northernmost point. The lighthouse is 14.3 meters tall and 31.4 meters above sea level. Originally the Japanese built a lighthouse here in 1896, which was the start of an undersea cable to Japan. The tower was damaged during American bombing raids during WWII. The Fugui Lighthouse was rebuilt by the ROC in 1949. The tower was built in its current form in 1962. It was opened to the public in 2015. The area nearby is a military base and radar station. Now it is one of the most popular destinations on the north coast of Taiwan. Because of its proximity to Taipei, there are many visitors, especially on weekends. Price: Free Parking: Free. Background: The sandstone that forms the Yehliu Formation was created between 10 and 20 million years ago and was pushed out of the sea along with northern Taiwan thousands of years ago. The Queen's head is formed by two layers of sandstone, one soft eroding layer on the bottom and a harder layer on top. This kind of sandstone formation can be seen around the world and is known as a hoodoo. The Queen's head was named after Queen Elizabeth I because it is thought to look like her. The head is eroding .2 to .5 CM per year and is expected to fall at any time! The name "Yehliu" comes from the Spanish name for the area "Putno Diablos" which was then also used by the Dutch, and transliterated by the Chinese settlers in the area as "Yehliu" in Chinese. Capybara Rock (Formerly Elephant Trunk Rock) is a rock shaped like its name in the Shenao area of Ruifang District, New Taipei City. There are also many interesting rock formations in the area. It was one of the most recognizable rock formations on the north coast and a popular location for, kayakers, snorkelers, and Instagrammers.

Map: Please see below:  Keelung Islet is the tall, rocky island off the coast of Keelung City, Taiwan that has recently been reopened to tourists. The island features a trail to the lighthouse at the highest peak that provides breathtaking views of the surrounding area. Just a short trip from Taipei, and then a 20-minute boat ride, it is one of the most accessible outer islands that you can visit in Taiwan.

Background: Keelung Islet is a volcanic remnant dating back to the Pleistocene era about 1 million years ago and is part of the Ryukyu Volcanic Arc which is formed from the subduction of the Philippine Sea Plate under the Eurasian Plate. After the volcano was formed, it was slowly eroded away by wave action, creating a steep mountain peak with sides at about a 60-degree angle. The island is 182 meters tall (597 feet), 960 meters long (3139 feet), and 400 meters (1312 feet) wide. Except for crabs, birds, lizards, and insects, the island remained uninhabited until the Japanese stationed troops here during the colonization of Taiwan. After the ROC took control of Taiwan, the island continued to be a military base. In 1980, the Keelung Islet Lighthouse was completed. It was the first lighthouse in Taiwan built in an octagonal shape, and the first powered by solar power and batteries. The islet was opened to tourists in 2001, however, tourism to the island was stopped in 2014 after Typhoon Maria ravaged the island, and was closed for five years until 2019. Currently, the island is open to tourists, but you cannot stay overnight there. The only people who live on the island are members of the Coast Guard who stay there on a rotational basis. Tourist boats take off daily from Baodouzi Harbor from April until October, and the island is closed to tourists during the winter months due to strong northeasterly winds. The island is popular, especially on weekends during the summer, but only 1200 people are allowed to visit each day, so you may have to book in advance. Hours: Boats to Keelung Islet leave at about 8 AM, with the last boats leaving at about 1 PM. Everyone has to be off the island before sundown. Each trip lasts about 3-5 hours depending on the itinerary. You can book boat tickets on Klook here or KKday here. Boats to Keelung Islet are only available from April to October due to northeasterly winds in the winter. If you visit from May – June you will be able to see white lily flowers, and August to September is golden spider lily season. Map:  Shen Ao Railbike is a short bicycle ride on an old Railway line on the coast of Ruifang, New Taipei. Visitors are seated two people per bicycle car, which has a roof and great views of the ocean scenery nearby. Overall it is a fun adventure for the whole family.
Historical Background: Originally the Shen’ao Railway was constructed during the Japanese era in 1936 for transport of coal and other mine exports. After World War II, Taiwan Metal Mining Co. took over but ceased operations in 1962 due to financial difficulties. TRA built a new Shen’ao Line that opened in 1965 for freight, extending passenger services in 1967. Services ended again in 1989 due to the completion of the new oceanside highway and the closure of a coal power plant in the area, but the line was revived in 2014 to support the museum and related tourism activities. In 2019, a Railbike attraction was introduced between Badouzi and Shen’ao using the old railway tracks on a 1.3 KM long track. In 2024, services between the National Marine Science Museum and Badouzi were suspended for slope improvement works, expected to be completed by 2025. Hours:Roughly 9 AM to 5 PM. Background: Tamsui Old Street developed alongside the Tamsui Harbor, which was opened in 1860 during the Qing Dynasty as part of the Treaty of Tientsin which ended the Second Opium War. It was one of only eight ports in the entire Qing empire that was open to trade with the west. As a result, it became a focal point for trade in Taiwan. It was also the western terminus of the Danlan Old Trail, which was a network of roads and trails that sent tea and other goods from Yilan to Tamsui. It remained an important port until it started to silt in during the 1900s, and after the construction of Keelung Harbor. There are also a number of important historical buildings near Tamsui Old Street such as Fort San Domingo, Hobe Fort, and others. Tamsui Old Street has always existed next to the old harbor, and recently there have been projects from the local government to improve tourism, such as widening roads and making a riverside walkway. With the completion of the Red Line MRT with its terminus in 1997 right at the edge of the old street, Tamsui became an extremely popular destination for residents in greater Taipei and remains to be so today. Badouzi Harbor is a busy fishing harbor with a popular seafood market in Keelung, and also has a few seafood restaurants inside. You can also take a ferry to Keelung Islet from here. It is definitely worth visiting on your next trip to Keelung.

Background: The sandstone and sedimentary that forms the Badouzi formations were created between 10 and 20 million years ago, and was pushed out of the sea along with northern Taiwan thousands of years ago. The rock formations formed by easily eroding sandstone, by the sea and waves. The area around Chaojing Park was a protected military base and garbage dump, after which civilians were allowed to freely visit. Kite flying is also a popular activity at the park. Hours: 10 AM to 8 PM Please note that Badouzi Harbor Seafood Market is temporarily closed for renovations as of 2023.
