Shilin Night Market (aka Shihlin Night Market) is the largest night market in Taipei and also one of the most popular. Full of delicious street food, small hole-in-the-wall restaurants, souvenirs, and clothes, it is a great destination to experience Taiwan's night market culture.

Background:
Shihlin Night market lies next to Jiantan MRT station, surrounded by Wenlin Road (文林路), Jihe Road (基河路), and small alleyways Xiaobei Street (小北街), and Xiaoxi Street (小西街), forming a giant triangle making it the biggest night market in Taipei City by area. 
Shihlin may have the most food stalls and restaurants of any night market in Taiwan, and is often regarded as the best or one of the favorite night markets in Taiwan by both locals and tourists alike.
The night market features multiple alleyways as well as an underground food court and underground parking garage. 
Located next to Mingchuan University, Soochow University, China Culture University, and Shih Chien University, it has a constant supply of hungry university students visiting every day.

Shilin Market was first established in 1909 near the Matzu Cicheng Temple, which now lies at the center of the night market. Before that is was a resting stop for cargo on the way to Dadaocheng. 
In 1998, Shilin Market was named as a historical monument. After that from 1999-2011, the market underwent multiple renovations, and relocated to a temporary structure near Jiantan MRT station, until renovations were completed in 2012.

Ximending is a historical neighborhood and shopping district in west Taipei. Originally built by the Japanese as an entertainment district, it later became the first designated pedestrian zone in Taiwan. Here you can find night market like food choices, historical sights, and endless shopping options. It is definitely worth a stop on your trip to Taipei.

Historical Background:
The land that Ximen Shopping District stands on was once part of Basay tribal land. The Basay people had lived on the land for thousands of years before the first Chinese settlers.
Sections of the area indicate that there was settlements here during the Dutch rule in the 1600s.
The name Ximending refers to the neighborhood just outside the west gate of Taipei City. Before the Japanese colonization of Taiwan, this area was wilderness connecting Taipei with Bangka. The Japanese decided to develop it into an entertainment area around the turn of the 20th century.  The walls of Taipei were later torn down in 1905. 
One historical building here is the Red House Theater (紅樓劇場) which was built in 1908. Originally the building was a department store, but after 1945 the building was transformed into a theater. After a fire in the year 2000, it was renovated and turned into a museum with shops and theater with more modern equipment. 
In the year 2000, Ximending was designated as a pedestrian zone, the first in Taiwan.  Because if its popularity, the area is also known for more crime and illicit activities. 
Currently the area sees over 300 shoppers per month. The area is also especially popular with young people because there are many high schools and cram schools nearby.

Feng Chia Night Market (aka Fengjia Night Market) in Taichung City is said to be the largest and also has the best food of any night market in Taiwan. Here you can find every Taiwanese snack food you could ever want and more. Popular foods here include stinky tofu, danbing (egg pancake), fried chicken, taro ice, octopus balls, and much more for you to explore. It should definitely be on your list for your next trip to Taiwan. 

​Background:
The area where Feng Chia Night Market stands was a former dependents village for KMT military veterans. However, in 1963 the area was chosen for the new Feng Chia Industrial Academy, which later became Feng Chia University. Due to the increase of nearly 20,000 students, the area outside the school became a hotbed for cheap snacks to feed hungry students. The same thing has happened in other areas of Taiwan, such as Shilin Night Market, which is close to Mingchuan University, Soochow University, China Culture University, and Shih Chien University. 
Currently, Fengchia Night Market has nearly 400 stall spaces and has over 10 million visitors annually. 
The night market is busy every night, bus especially on holidays and weekends.

Taipei City Mall, also known as Taipei Underground Street, Miki Plaza, Y District Underground Mall, Y區地下街, or Taipei Main Underground Shopping Street 台北地下街 英文介紹, is the largest underground shopping area in Taiwan roughly between and around the underground red line Zhongshan MRT, Airport MRT, and Taipei Main Station. It is like four shopping malls in one. Here one can purchase clothing, toys, electronics, handicrafts, and more. Its location underground between underground public transportation rail lines makes it a convenient and popular place for shoppers. In this blog, we will share our experience including a detailed map of the area.

Background:
Taipei City Mall opened on March 29, 2000, and is one of several underground shopping streets in Taipei. The mall provided relocation space for 810 tenants from the Zhonghua Shopping Mall which was demolished in 1992.
The Taipei Underground Mall is located beneath Section 1 of Civic Boulevard (Zhengzhou Road), stretching from Beimen Station on the Taipei Metro Songshan-Xindian Line to the Tamsui-Xinyi Line. The mall spans 825 meters and covers an area of 35,738 square meters.
The Taipei Underground Mall has a total of 28 entrances and exits, 14 on the north side and 14 on the south side. All are labeled with the letter Y. 
Taipei City Mall is even known as the “Akihabara of Taipei”. In addition, Taipei City Mall is open throughout the year and is unaffected by changes in weather. It is a great place for kids and families.
It also connects with the Zhongshan Underground Mall, Taipei Station Mall, and Station Front Mall. 
The area includes Taipei Underground Street Mall (Zone Y), MRT Zhongshan Underground Mall (Zone R), Zhongshan Underground Book Street (Zone R), Station Front Metro Mall (Zone Z), Taipei Main Station Underground Mall (Zone M), and Xinzhongshan Linear Park. There are endless toy shops, video game stores, clothing stores, bookstores, and restaurants in the area.

The Miramar Mall in Dazhi, Zhongshan District of Taipei, is the largest shopping mall in northern Taiwan, with a distinctive giant Ferris wheel on top of it. Here you can shop, eat at restaurants, enjoy a movie, and much more. It is definitely worth a stop on your next trip to Taipei.   

Background:
Miramar Mall opened in 2004. Before it was built, the area where it stands was once the Keelung River, which was rerouted, and the land here was reclaimed in the early 2000s. At the time, it was the largest building project on top of the new reclaimed land near the Keelung River. 
It is the largest shopping mall in northern Taiwan and has the fourth largest Ferris Wheel in Taiwan at 80 meters tall, 120 meters off the ground level. 
The mall is nine stories high and includes an IMAX theater. ​

Shuangcheng Street Night Market is a large eating and shopping area near Zhongshan Elementary School MRT Station in Zhongshan District in Taipei. The night market includes an open "food court" stall area and a closed market area that sells clothes and other items. Even though it is a relatively small night market, it is one of the oldest and most well-established in Taipei. ​

Background:
Shuangcheng Street Night Market is named after Shuangcheng Street (雙城街) on which it is located. The market spans from Lane 10 and Lane 13 of Shuang Cheng Street to Nong An Street (農安街) in Zhongshan District, Taipei City, filling what would have been the street with food stalls and shops.
The exact origins of Shuang Cheng Street Night Market are unclear, but according to the Taipei City Market Administration, it has a history dating back to at least 1971. 
Despite being called a night market, Shuangcheng Street Market also operates during the day. Additionally, there is a rotation of stalls between day and night (8 AM - 4 PM, and then 5 PM - Midnight) offering a different experience depending on the time of day, although some stalls operate continuously.
While Shuang Cheng Street Night Market mainly consists of food stalls, it is connected to the Qingguang Market (晴光市場) shopping area which is covered and sells mainly clothing items.
The night market is popular with both locals and foreigners and is especially busy on weekends and holidays.

TaiMall Park is a fun playground and park in front of TaiMall in Luzhu District of Taoyuan, built in 2020. Here you can enjoy a large jungle gym area, climbing areas, slides, swings, a skating rink, basketball courts, and more. You can also check out the nearby TaiMall shopping area. 

Historical Background:
TaiMall was completed in 1999, and was the first large-scale mall built in Taiwan. 
TaiMall Park was built in 2020, and includes 13 swing sets, and slides 15 meters high, a 10 meter high climbing dome, a basketball court, a circular plaza, flower gardens, grassy areas, and a skating rink. The main feature of the park is a custom-made three-story giant dome climbing net slide imported from South Korea, where visitors can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of the park from the platform before sliding down a 15-meter slide. The total cost for the park was 80 million NT. The land where the park was built was originally owned by TaiMall, but was given to the Taoyuan City Government, however TaiMall still maintains the grounds.

With multiple skyscrapers, upscale shopping malls, international restaurants, hotels, cinemas, and more, Xinyi Shopping District in Taipei is known as the Manhattan of Taiwan, and the world's densest commercial district. It has also become a financial center with many companies creating their Taiwan headquarters here. It is also a great place for visitors to shop and enjoy the most vibrant part of Taipei. 

Background:
Xinyi Shopping District is roughly the area of Xinyin Planning District (信義計畫區) which was designed in the 1970s. Before that time, the area was mainly empty fields for farming. The goal of the plan was to ease pressure off of the old crowded city center around Ximending and Taipei Station. The area is over 153 Hectares and includes 15 department stores, including Shin Kong Mitsukoshi, Taipei 101 Mall, Xinyi Breeze, and more, making it the world's densest commercial district.

Shida Night Market is a large eating and shopping area near National Taiwan Normal University. The night market sits next to two other major universities, meaning there are always crowds of hungry students looking for cheap snacks here. It is definitely worth a stop on your next trip to Taipei. ​

Background:
​The name Shida comes from the Chinese name of National Taiwan Normal University which is right next door.
The area is close to three universities: National Taiwan University, and the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, National Taiwan Normal University.
Because there are so many young university students nearby, the area has become a hot bed for shopping. The area can be very crowded especially on weekends and holidays.

Gongguan Night Market and Gonguan Shopping District are a large shopping area near Gonguan MRT Station. The night market sits next to National Taiwan University, meaning there are always crowds of hungry students looking for cheap snacks here. Guanghua Digital Plaza in Taipei is the Mecca for nerds and geeks looking for spare computer parts in Taiwan. The area around the plaza is also filled with countless other electronics stores. It is a one-stop shop for all your electronics needs. 

Background:
Guanghua Digital Plaza first started in 1973 under the old Guanghua Bridge which spanned the old railroad line in Taipei. During the time that Taipei's railroad was moved underground in 1992, Guanghua Digital Plaza also moved to an underground location on Bade Road, and then to a temporary building in 2006. on Civic Boulevard. By this time, many electronics shops had opened in the area. The main Guanghua Plaza building was completed in 2008, which has seven stories and over 196 vendors. Two other buildings were added to the plaza in 2018 and 2021, which added hotel rooms, offices, and restaurants. 
Currently, the area acts as a venue for the reveal of many new products from many big-name companies such as Acer, Asus, Microsoft, and Intel. 
This electronics market attracts thousands of visitors each day.

Nantun Old Street is a historic area in Taichung, including historic buildings, shops, and Wanhe Temple. It is known as the oldest settlement in the Taichung Basin. Here you can also find food stalls and restaurants as well as Chinese medicine, clothing shops, and jewelry shops. It is definitely worth a stop on your next trip to Taichung.  

Background:
The area where Nantun Old Street stands was originally the land of the Babuza Aborigine Tribe, which was a Taiwan plains tribe that has some members that now live in Puli Township of Nantou. The first Chinese settlers came to this area in 1684, and created a settlement known as Litoudian (犂頭店 literally plough shop) that sold mainly farming tools to local settlers. Soon the area became filled with shops and became the center of commerce for the area and a transportation hub for goods moving north and south. 
There is a tradition during every Dragon Boat Festival for local residents to wear clogs and stomp on the streets. This is because in the olden days, Pangolins would hide near houses and hibernate, but if they were woken up, they could help to till the earth and provide a good harvest for the local farmers. 
The old street also includes buildings from the Japanese Era with baroque facades. 
Like many other old streets in Taiwan, it became obsolete with the completion of Taiwan's railway system. 
Today the old street is still a popular shopping area in Nantun with historical significance.

Pingxi Old Street has the second largest old street in Pingxi district, and is full of delicious food, souvenirs, and opportunities to light off sky lanterns. From Pingxi station you can walk down to the historic streets in the small town, and take selfies with the train tracks and bridges that cross the two rivers passing through the town. It is definitely a must see stop along the Pingxi Railway.

Background:
Pingxi station was completed in 1929 to transport coal out of the area. Currently it has an average of 844 passengers per day.  
Pingxi is the third busiest stop on the Pingxi Railway after Shifen and Jingtong. 
Pingxi is also a popular spot for setting off Sky Lanterns. The practice of lighting off sky lanterns in Taiwan began in Shifen, when during the Qing Dynasty local villagers would flee into the mountains during raids from bandits. Once the bandits had left, the remaining villagers sent sky lanterns into the air to let the fleeing villagers know that it was safe to come down from the mountains.
The people of Pingxi send off sky lanterns as a symbol of peace, and celebrate every year during Lantern Festival (元宵節), a Chinese holiday.
Setting off sky lanterns as a tourist attraction began in the 1990's and you can find people lighting off lanterns every day from Pingxi.
You can also enjoy the mining hamlet feel of the town, which has characteristic sloping streets and bridges, that all have views of the passing trains.

By Train: Take the TRA to Ruifang Station, and then switch to the Pingxi Railway line. Get off at Pingxi Station, and then walk west down the tracks and you have arrived!

Wufenpu is a wholesale clothing market in Xinyi District of Taipei, and the largest wholesale clothing market in Taiwan. It covers an entire city block, full of mostly wholesale clothing shops. If you are looking to shop for clothes on the cheap in Taiwan, this is the place for you.

Historical Background:
The area where Wufenpu stands was once tribal land for the Taiwanese plains aborigines. In 1769, five Chinese families from Fujian moved to settle in this area, converting it into farmland. Because of this, the area was named Wufenpu (literally five portion port) named for the five families that lived there in the Qing Dynasty, who needed five portions of goods from the Qing authorities (Wu 五 = five Fen 分/份 = portion), and 埔 pu which means a port or flat land next to a river (near the Xikou River and Keelung River).
During the Japanese era, an insane asylum was established here, which made outsiders look down upon the area. 
After WWII, Typhoon Ellen in 1959 ravaged Taipei, in what was known as the 87 floods (八七水災), which inundated much of the city. After this, the government built new homes for the many KMT military servicemen in what is now Wufenpu. Later on, these homes were sold to many families moving to Taipei from southern Taiwan, mainly from Changhua, who made clothes for a living. Wufenpu soon became one of the main areas for clothing production in Taiwan.
As labor costs in Taiwan increased, clothing production began to move to China and Southeast Asia. However, Wufenpu still held on as a major wholesale clothing market, with shipments coming now from China and Southeast Asia. It's also where many of the night market stalls in Taiwan get their inventory.
Improvements to Taipei's public transportation such as Taipei's railway being moved underground, and the opening of the blue line MRT, with access to Wufenpu via Houshanpi Station, Wufenpu retained its prowess as a convenient location for selling wholesale clothes. 
Today the Wufenpu roughly covers the square shaped area in between Songshan Road, Yongji Road, Zhongpu North Road, and Songlong Road, although there are many clothing shops just outside this area as well. 
The area can get busy on weekends and the alleyways are only big enough for about two people to cross at a time.

The Xingda Seafood Market (aka Xingda Tourist Fish Market, Hsinta Harbor Fish Market or Qieding Fish Market) is a large seafood market in Qieding District of Kaohsiung. You can find just about any kind of fresh seafood here, including sashimi, whole fish, shellfish, squid, etc., along with other traditional Taiwanese snacks. Also, the market is known for high quality knives. It is definitely worth a trip if you are in the area.

Background:
Xingda Seafood is often called Qieding Fish Market because it is located in Qieding District of Kaohsiung, which is not very large and only covers a small area near the harbor. This area has been a delta for rivers and since the Qing Dynasty has served as the border between Tainan and Kaohsiung, which has changed with the Erren River. 
Xingda Harbor was built in 1997 and consists of four parts: a yacht tourism and business area, ocean business development zone, Fuli harbor living zone, and themed relaxation zone. There is also a fish market here. In the future, there are plans to expand capacity for the harbor.

Hualien's old railway pedestrian area in the middle of the city has taken a 1.8 km old railway line and transformed into a pedestrian shopping district, much like an old street or night market. It is a worth while stroll on your next visit to Hualien. 

Background:
The original Hualien Train station was built over the current Dongdamen Night Market, however the railway was diverted in 1979, leaving the old railway left to rust. The old railway left is 1.8 km long and 6 m wide. In 2003, a plan was put in place to renovate the old railway into a pedestrian shopping area.

The Jingpu Tropic of Cancer Monument is a special geological marker along the road on the coast of Hualien County, and is a must stop for a selfie.  There are also some fruit stands and shops nearby. It is  a beautiful and unique monument to commemorate your journey around the island.

Historical Background:
The Jingpu Tropic of Cancer Monument sits at 23.5 degrees N, and is the dividing line between tropical and temperate climates. You will notice that more tropical fruit grows south of here. At noon during the summer solstice, sunshine will shoot right down the black center of the monument, meaning everything will have no shadow under the sun.
Jingpu has been inhabited by aboriginal peoples for thousands of years. Nearby you can enjoy local aboriginal culture, food, and enjoy the coast. 

How to get there: Take highway 11 south from Hualien City about 60km or two and a half hours. If you do not have a scooter or car, buses also stop along this route. You can also take bus 1140A which takes about three hours.

Jianguo Flower Market is a long market that lies under the Jianguo freeway and is open only on weekends. The market is split into an artist's corner, the main flower market selling plants and gardening products, and a jade market. It is definitely worth a stop during your next weekend in Taipei.

Background:
The Jianguo Flower Market was started in 1982 shortly after the completion of the Jianguo Elevated Expressway. Ever since that time, the space under the bridge has been used as a weekend market. The market consists of a gardening products area, an art area, and a jade area.
The market is usually very crowded and parking is limited, so it is best to visit using public transportation.
