Taiwan is the most friendly country in the world for foreigners and one of the best tourist destinations in the world. Many have called it the best-kept secret in Asia. When to go: The best time to go they say is anytime! There is always a part of Taiwan that is great to visit at any given time of year. However, most areas are most comfortable around May when it is not too hot and there are no northeasterly winds or typhoons. The typhoon season lasts from around June to October. The tourist busy season is during summer break from June to August, during which time it can be hard to book a hostel or airplane ticket. Winter is the less crowded season, but the water will be colder, there will be constant wind (which could cancel transportation), and it will rain more often. Background: The area where Feng Chia Night Market stands was a former dependents village for KMT military veterans. However, in 1963 the area was chosen for the new Feng Chia Industrial Academy, which later became Feng Chia University. The same thing has happened in other areas of Taiwan, such as Shilin Night Market, which is close to Mingchuan University, Soochow University, China Culture University, and Shih Chien University. Gaomei Wetlands in Taichung is one of the best places to see wildlife in Taiwan. Here you can find thousands of intertidal creatures, including crabs, birds, and amphibious fish. The mud flats extend for miles during low tide, creating an intertidal wonderland. There is also a long boardwalk for those who don't want to get their feet wet. It is a must-stop on your next vacation to Taichung.
Background: The Gaomei Wetlands nature preserve was established in 2005 and covers over 300 hectares, but only covers 1/10th the area of the wetlands in the Dadu River Delta. The Xinshe Sea of Flowers (aka Xinshe Sea of Flowers and Taichung International Flower Carpet Festival 新社花海暨臺中國際花毯節) is a large field of flowers in Xinshe District of Taichung. The flowers usually bloom in the wintertime and are a major tourist attraction in the area. It is a great place for photography and taking selfies, and should definitely be on your bucket list for your next trip to Taichung.

Rainbow Village is a brightly colored artistic former military dependents village located in Taichung, Taiwan. It was converted into a tourist destination by one of the former residents in order to save the village from destruction. The unique paintings cover almost the entire village and have become a major spot for tourists and Instagrammers.
Background: The artist behind the work, Huang Yung-Fu (黃永阜), was a KMT soldier who retreated from mainland China with the ROC army. He and his family were relocated to a dependent's village in Taichung, where they stayed permanently. Eventually, after over half a century the village became worn down and developers wanted to tear it down. In order to save his village, Mr. Huang painted the houses starting in about 2008, which caught the attention of local university students who campaigned to save the village. Mr. Huang died January 23rd, 2024 at the age of 101. The village is now a popular tourist attraction, attracting more than a million visitors a year. The "Dajia Stone House" in Taichung reminds many people of the movie Up. It's called the stone house because of the pile of stones in front, and the colored balls are floaties used for fishing that the owner has collected over time. Please be respectful when visiting because people still live in this house.
Background: According to a news report by ITN here, The owner of the Dajia Stone house is Mr. Liu, who began collecting rocks and fishing instruments to decorate his house 40 years ago. Currently, Mr. Liu lives in the house with his wife and son. However, the house has become a popular photo destination only recently, to which Mr. Liu is pleased. Despite this other neighbors nearby have complained to the city government about the smell, cockroaches, and rats that the pile of rubble attracts. Parts of the rubble have been cleaned up before by Taichung's sanitation division, only to have Mr. Liu verbally abuse those trying to clean the mess and pile on more garbage later. Da'an Beach (aka Daan Beach) in Da'an District of Taichung City may be Taichung's best beach. Here you can find long stretches of sandy beach, a bike path, campground, free public swimming pools, as well as nearby resorts. Popular activities here also include kite flying and surfing. It is a great place to enjoy the coastline of central Taiwan.
Background: Da'an Beach was opened for public recreation starting in 2013 for local residents to enjoy beach activities during the summer. The area includes a well-kept beach, foot washes, showers, swimming pools, a bike path, and a campground. Swimming is banned in the ocean but is encouraged in the pools. Dajia Old Street (aka Shuntian Road Old Street) is a historic area in Taichung, including Qing-era and Japanese-era buildings, shops, and Jenn Lann Temple. It is known as one of the oldest settlements in the Taichung. The town is also home to the Dajia Mazu pilgrimage, the largest religious procession in Taiwan. Here you can also find food stalls and restaurants as well as Chinese medicine, clothing shops, and jewelry shops. It is definitely worth a stop on your next trip to Taichung.
Background: The area where Dajia Old Street stands was originally the land of the Taokas Aborigine Tribe, which was a Taiwan plains tribe that has some members that now live in Puli Township of Nantou. The first Chinese settlers came to this area in the late 1600s during the kingdom of Tungming, and created a settlement known as Dajia, near the Dajia River. During the 1700s, more settlers from Lukang came north and began to settle the land. Soon the area became filled with shops and became the center of commerce for the area and a transportation hub for goods. In the 1800s, a bamboo wall was built around the town creating a city enclosure. During the Opium Wars, a British ship called the Brig Ann ran aground nearby and the survivors were attacked by local militia who thought they had launched an amphibious assault, and falsely claimed that they had sunken enemy ships and defeated their army. The city of Dajia was also captured during the Daichaochun Incident (戴潮春事件), a rebel uprising during the Qing Dynasty, which was soon quelled by the Qing soldiers. During the Japanese invasion of Taiwan, nearby Da'an port was barraged by Japanese ships, but the local people quickly surrendered to the Japanese. The old street also includes buildings from the Japanese Era with baroque facades. Today the old street is still a popular shopping area in Dajia with historical significance. The town is also home to the Dajia Mazu pilgrimage, the largest religious procession in Taiwan, which transports the sea goddess Mazu between Dajia and Xingang, Chiayi. Nantun Old Street is a historic area in Taichung, including historic buildings, shops, and Wanhe Temple. It is known as the oldest settlement in the Taichung Basin. Here you can also find food stalls and restaurants as well as Chinese medicine, clothing shops, and jewelry shops. It is definitely worth a stop on your next trip to Taichung.
Background: The area where Nantun Old Street stands was originally the land of the Babuza Aborigine Tribe, which was a Taiwan plains tribe that has some members that now live in Puli Township of Nantou. There is a tradition during every Dragon Boat Festival for local residents to wear clogs and stomp on the streets. This is because in the olden days, Pangolins would hide near houses and hibernate, but if they were woken up, they could help to till the earth and provide a good harvest for the local farmers. The old street also includes buildings from the Japanese Era with baroque facades. Like many other old streets in Taiwan, it became obsolete with the completion of Taiwan's railway system. The Luce Memorial Chapel in Tunghai University, Taichung has a unique shape that has made it the icon of Taichung City. It is the central landmark of Tunghai University, completed in 1962 in honor of Rev. Henry Luce. Now it is one of Taichung City's most popular tourist attractions.
Background: The Luce Memorial Chapel was built in 1962 at Tunghai University (THU), in honor of Rev. Henry W. Luce. Tunghai University was founded with the ideals of Christianity and holistic education. Not long after the university's founding in 1955, the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia decided that because the university was so far away from central Taichung Dadu Mountain, they needed a church to make it more convenient for students and faculty to worship. The chapel does not belong to a particular denomination but is considered a protestant church. The Chapel is dedicated to Reverend Henry W. Luce, who was a Presbyterian missionary in China from roughly 1897-1935, and father of Henry Luce, an American magazine magnate who founded Time, Life, Fortune, and Sports Illustrated. Mr. Luce was born in China while is father was a missionary, and later moved to the United States as a young boy. He played a role in creating a good public image of Chiang Kai-shek and Song Mei-ling helping mold American foreign policy toward Taiwan. He helped to sponsor the chapel's construction in honor of his father. The chapel is built on a hexagonal base and has a unique curved reinforced concrete roof, known as a conid structure, and is 19.2 meters tall. The building is also said to be influenced by the Yale University Art Gallery. Originally the building was planned to be made from wood but concrete was later chosen as more durable for Taiwan's environment. The architects were I.M. Pei and Chi-kuan Chen. I.M. Pei designed the glass pyramid at the Louvre in Paris. In 2023, the chapel underwent renovations which were expected to be completed on November 2nd, 2023. Wuling Farm is a recreational farm in the mountains of Taichung, Taiwan. It is one of the only places that you can spot the endangered Formosan Landlocked Salmon in the wild, and includes flowers, fruit trees, tea plantations, cherry blossoms, hikes, camping, waterfalls, and wildlife to enjoy. It is a great place to experience Taiwan's high mountain ecology.
Background: Originally the Qijia Valley where Wuling Farm sits was home to seven families of the Ayatal Tribe, and aboriginal peoples lived here starting over 4,000 years ago. The aboringal people were relocated to Sqoyaw Village in the 1950s. Wuling Farm was established in 1963 as a way to provide a living for retired KMT veterans. The farm's original purpose was to plant temperate fruit trees and vegetables. Starting in 1989, the farm began tourist acticites, such as building a campground, tea houses, gardens, hotels, and a tourist service center. The farm sits at about 2000 meters above sea level (6,561 feet). Also, it can get very cold in the winter. How to get there: By Car/Scooter: It is actually faster to travel to Wuling Farm from Taipei instead of downtown Taichung, even though technically the farm is in Taichung City. From Yilan, take provincial highway 7 through Datong Township and up the mountain until you reach Wuling Farm. The most popular hiking trails in Taichung City are in the Dakeng Scenic Area, and these are numbered #1-10. This blog will take you through hiking trail #6. These trails are relatively easy and have some great views of eastern Taichung City and the surrounding mountains.
Background: Dakeng Scenic Area is a well maintained hiking area with ten main hiking trails. Trails #1-5 are more difficult and harder to get to, and trails #6-10 are easier and more accessible via public transportation. All of these trails are somewhat interconnected and traverse the hills in eastern Beitun District of Taichung City, and have great views of the city and surrounding mountain scenery. These trails are especially popular with Taichung City residents on the weekends. Hours: 24/7 Price: Free Trail #6 Difficulty: Trail #6 is an easy-moderate hike and takes about 2-3 hours. The trail is 1.6 km long one way and reaches about 200 meters of elevation gain. How to get there: By Car/Scooter: Take Dongshan Road East out of Taichung, then turn left under Highway 74. You will then need to turn right on Jiancheng Alley (建成巷) and keep going up the mountain until you reach the parking lot. By bus: Take Central Taiwan Bus 1 east from Taiuchung, then get off at Dongshan Songzhu Rd. Intersection, then walk about half an hour north to the trail head. Map: Please see below: |
