Only a 20 minute car drive away, Dawulun Beach in Keelung is the closest sandy ocean beach to Taipei City. Although it is small, it has a calm shallow swimming area and the sand looks like it was shipped straight from Kenting. It is definitely worth a visit for all beach lovers in Taipei.
Background: This beach is also known as Aodi Beach (澳底沙灘) or Waimushan Beach (外木山沙灘). In 2007, a road was created that connected Dawulun Beach with Wanli, creating a circular road around the north coast that was previously cut off. After that, more and more tourists started coming to this beach, especially from Taipei, because it is the closest oceanside destination to Taipei City. On weekends during the summer, the area can be totally packed with people. There is free parking on the side of the road, but good spots are limited. You can always park for free on the steep road that goes up the hill. Map: Please see below: Our Journey: We have been to Dawulun Beach twice. It is a nice place to relax, and a convenient short ride from East Taipei. I am just sad I didn't come here earlier. It is a great beach with pristine sand and pure water. However sometimes there is a lot of trash floating in the water.

The area around Dawulun Beach is very commercialized. Don't worry if you forgot your swimming suit or swim toys, you can buy them here. Also there are plenty of places to shower as well as food options.
The beach consists of the main flat part and then close to the water the sand gets more steep, which is where people pitch their tents and beach umbrellas.
There is also a public restroom right on the beach, and you can see people like to fill up buckets of water from the sinks here to get a free shower.
A surf/SUP shop.
Roadside ice cream and toys.
BBQ and rotisserie chicken.
Further away from the beach past the fishing harbor there is a parking lot, but spots are limited and go fast.
Another unique aspect of this beach is you can see Keelung Islet in the background.

From here you can also hike up to Lover's Lake and Dawulun Fort.

The water here is pretty shallow and safe for kids, especially on the left side.
The sand here is also pristine. As good quality as you would see in Kenting.
But there are also tons of people.
Pretty much every weekend in the summer this place is packed.
The water here is also very calm and there aren't any currents.
The water being so calm though does accumulate some floating trash.
It is like an oceanside swimming pool.

If you have time, you can also hike up to Lovers Lake, a small lake a recreation area in Anle District of Keelung City. It has some easy trails, bridges, and a tower that looks over the area. The lake trails also connect to Dawulun Fort. Overall it is a nice scenic spot for a day trip in Northern Taiwan. For more info check out our full blog here.
You can also make your way up to Dawulun Fort, a Qing Dynasty era fort that once guarded the coast along Wanli, Jinshan, and Keelung, among a network of other forts.
