You may have heard of Taiwan Domino’s new polarizing flavor of pizza, brown sugar boba. It comes in at 199 NT to go (not including delivery) and has boba balls along with cheese, honey, and mochi all on normal pizza crust. Is it worth it? Read more to find out.
So, we bought this pizza pretty much on a whim, but we are not strangers to boba pizza. The boba pizza was invented by a pizza restaurant in Chiayi about a year ago, more on that below.
How does it taste? Just imagine a cheese and honey sandwich, and that’s pretty much exactly what you have here. Is that a good thing? Well it’s not the best dessert pizza I’ve ever had.
I think the people at Dominos wanted to make up for the Chiayi Restaurant inventors failure and add more sweetness to the design. But honey? Was that a good idea? This pizza goes way overboard on honey flavor. It’s almost overwhelming.
For people who have never experienced the boba ball texture in pizza, it may seem like a novelty. But for those of us experienced in such textures, it takes more to win us over. And Domino's didn’t deliver. They did add some mochi balls, which were sadly a little too sparing.
Have you ever had a honey boba tea? Neither have I. Would I rather drink boba milk tea than eat this pizza? Yes. What I’m saying is Domino's should have added sweetened condensed milk on this pizza instead of honey, cut out all the savory cheese, and just created a full on dessert boba pizza. Instead, they clung to cheese, added in honey for sweetness, and the result is just a weird honey cheese sandwich concoction. For those other boba pizza fans out there waiting for the boba pizza messiah to come, we must wait a little longer. Don’t worry, someday someone will get the boba pizza right. When that day comes, you can be sure my wallet will be habitually empty and my stomach full.
If you are wondering what the original Chiayi boba pizza is like, you can still get it. The Chiayi boba pizza was originally invented by Boss Pizza. It is only 130 NT and has much more boba per square inch than the Domino's version, so it easily wins the price and texture battle. But it is hardly sweet at all. It’s just a chewy cheese sandwich with lots of boba inside. Which is not bad. I think I still prefer it over the Domino's pizza. Although my wife thinks the Dominos one is better. You should go try both and decide for yourself.
There is a lesson to learn from the Boss Pizza. Even though they invented the boba pizza, they chose not to refine it. After people got over the interesting texture, they stopped buying because it just doesn't taste that good. They used to have a restaurant near Shida (NTNU) night market in Taipei, however it closed down. People stopped talking about the boba pizza. o I prophesy that the same will happen with this pizza. The hype will die down in a few months to a year. People will realize that its not a very good pizza. Domino's will probably stop selling it after a while. And we must keep waiting for the boba pizza messiah.
Just so you know, we enjoyed this pizza in Neihu Sports Park watching airplanes take off from Songshan Airport. I’ll have make a blog about this park in the future.
