Historical Backgorund:
Guanyin Temple (pictured above) was built in 1696 and was the first Buddhist temple built in Penghu, and is dedicated to Guanyin Pusa. It was destroyed in the Sino French War (1885) by French cannon attack, then rebuilt in 1891, and restored again in 1959.
Xiying Rainbow bridge, the large blur bridge that goes across the small harbor, was built in 2004, and was the first steel bridge built in Penghu. After the bridge and swimming area were completed, it soon became a center for exercise and leisure activities in the area. Our Journey:
The scenery around Guanyinting is simply breathtaking. Be sure to go there to watch the sunset (the sun sets just under the bridge) as well as see the bridge light up at night. Oh, and be sure to go at low tide. These are all things that I failed to do on my trip there.
Rainbow arches just in front of the bridge.
The pier to the left goes nowhere, but its a nice place for a stroll.
A view up the bridge.
View from the top of the Xiying Rainbow Bridge facing toward the city.
A man swims in the water below. The whole place is like a giant salty outdoor swimming pool.
Here is when it dawned on me that the rainbow bridge lights up with different colors at night from 7:00-10:00. Unfortunately I had to catch a plane back to Taipei that morning.
Huge waves bounce off the steps next to the pier. It also seems like a prime fishing spot.
The main swimming area on the east side of the park. It's best to go during low tide here when there is more sand uncovered.
If you stay at this spot until evening, you can see the sun set under the bridge.
There is also quite a large playground next to the waterfront!
The water here can get kind of dirty, but that didn't stop these people from enjoying the ocean on a hot summer day.
