Nangang Park is one of the most pleasant parks in Taipei. It features two large natural ponds, a large grassy area, a large children's play area, a jogging track, hiking trails, tennis courts, and much more. There are also amazing views of the nearby mountains, Taipei City, and the 101 tower. It is definitely worth a stop if you are in the area.

Background:
Nangang Park was originally called "Houshanpi 後山埤" which MRT Houshanpi Station on the blue line is named after, and literally means "the lake behind the hill." There are two other lakes in Nangang nearby, one is down the street from the park called Dongxinpi 東新埤, and the other one is accessible from Academia Sinica called Sanchongpupi 三重埔埤. The three lakes are home to waterfowl and other wildlife. Originally Houshanpi was one lake but was later split into two because of silting. 
Nangang Park was established in 1987 around the natural Houshanpi Lake/Pond. The pond also acts as a flood control system. 
The park is usually not very busy but you will see a lot of people here during nice weather and on weekends and holidays.

How to get there:
By Car/Scooter: From Houshanpi MRT station on Zhongxiao East Road, turn east onto Dongxin Road until you reach the park. There is paid parking at the park entrance and on the side of the road.

By Bus/MRT: From Kunyang MRT station on Zhongxiao East Road, walk east until you reach the park. The park is about a 10 minute walk. You can purchase a discount easy card to use on the MRT from Klook here or KKday here. You can also book an MRT travel pass on Klook here.

Our Journey:

We have been to Nangang Park dozens of times. After all, I live in Nangang. It is one of the funnest parks in the area for children especailly after they renovated the child play area. Also it is just a beautiful park in general, with great views of the ponds, mountains, and amazing views of Taipei and the 101 tower. 

The front entrance to the park features a very prominent Chinese style archway.

Dusk is a great time to visit. 

No swimming allowed here.

Most of the pond is open for fishing. You don't need a fishing license to fish from the ground in Taiwan.

There is also a nice running track that circles the south end of the park. 

There are also little paths through the trees here. 

There is a zipline here that is sometimes taped off with caution tape...?

This slide is pretty hard to get up, but a good challenge for kids.

If you hike the hills on the south side, you can see some great views of Taipei. 

It is also a great place to watch the sunset or see the New Year Fireworks on the 101 tower. 

There is also a small temple in front of the park and a bus stop.

You may also see statues of cows everywhere because that is the local village mascot. I think it may have to do with the Yogurt Factory nearby. ​
