Tonghua Street Night Market (aka Linjiang Street Night Market) is a large night market in Da'an District of Taipei City. It's not as touristy as other night markets in Taipei, and you can find almost anything to eat here, along with cheap clothes and accessories. If you want to experience an authentic night market experience while in Taipei, Tonghua is the place to go.
Background: Before1964, the area known as Tonghua Night Market was just rice paddies. In 1965, a military dependents village was built on Tonghua Street. In 1979, Linjiang Street was created as an asphalt road, and has since become what we know today as Tonghua Street Night Market. The name of the night market was officially changed to Linjiang Street Tourist Night Market (臨江街觀光夜市) in 2001. The night market sits between Tonghua Street and Keelung Road. It is roughly 300 meters long and has over200 food stalls. Popular foods that the night market is known for include dry noodles, oyster omlettes, suasages, brazed meat, among others. With competition from Raohe Street, Shihlin Night Market, Ximending, and Ningxia Night Market, not as many foreign tourists end up visiting Tonghua Street. Hours: Roughly 6:00 PM to Midnight. Hotels in Taipei: We have stayed at and recommend the Yuanshan Grand Hotel, once the tallest building in Taiwan and still the most grand (book on Booking.com here, Tripadvisor here, or Agoda here). We have stayed at and also recommend Fu Chang Hotel in Ximending, which is within walking distance of Ximending shopping district (book on Booking.com here, Tripadvisor here, or Agoda here). Looking for a hotel? We recommend booking through Booking.com here, which provides the best quality selection of accommodation in Taiwan. How to get there: By MRT: Take the red line to Xinyi Anhe Station, then get off at exit 3, then take a left down Toinghua Street for four blocks until you reach Linjiang Street, the entrance to the night market. You can also book an MRT travel pass on Klook here. By car/scooter: Go East on Xinyi Road and then turn right on Tonghua Street until you come to Linjiang Street. There is some scooter parking on Tonghua Street and in the alleys, but for a car you need to park in a nearby parking lot or garage. Looking for scooter rental in Taipei? I used to live just a few blocks away and would often visit. There is also a nice morning market there with some of the cheapest fruits and vegetables in Taipei. You can buy Tonghua Night Market food pass on Klook here.
There are two entrances, one on the east and one on the west. I usually come from the west side entrance (pictured above) because there are more spots to park a scooter there.
IKEA 100 NT Convenience Store IKEA 百元商店
Across from the west entrance is a new IKEA express store that has just opened up. I’m a big fan of the convenience store style IKEA on Tonghua Street. Most of the stuff I want to buy at IKEA is there already and I don’t have to walk through a maze in the warehouse store to get it.
Sadly as of 2023 the IKEA express store is closed.
A lady selling fresh fruits at the front of the market.
Ties on sale for 100 NT per tie. I have never bought a tie here. Ties at Daiso are only 49 NT.
Electronics and random things being sold in the shops. When there are no police around, the middle of the night market is filled with food stalls. But once the cops come, they scatter into the side alleys.
There are also a bunch of claw machines that have popped up. I have never played one nor do I plan to.
Xingfutang Brown Sugar Boba Milk 幸福堂黑糖珍珠鮮奶
A great Taiwan drink chain that has set up shop in Tonghua Night Market is Xingfutang (幸福堂).
There Boba Milk is delicious and only 45 NT!
Jinxingfa General Store 金興發百貨店
Another fun place to shop in the market is Jinxingfa General Store (金興發百貨店) which sells pretty much everything. Go have a look! There are three stories. Most of it is electronics, stationary, accessories, and household items for the average person. There are tons of these stores around Taiwan and I love them.
Jinxingfa sits right in the middle of the night market.
Yikou Jinsu Stinky Tofu 一口金酥臭豆腐
Right in front of Jinxingfa Store is perhaps the best Stinky Tofu in the night market, Yikou Jinsu Stinky Tofu (一口金酥臭豆腐). There is almost always a line of people there waiting to buy some.
There is another instant noodle shop called "50." Yes, it just sells various flavors of instant noodles.
3C Wholesale Electronics 3C全店出清
Another place I love to go is the 3C wholesaler store, which also has a stall in Raohe Street Night Market. Everyone has a phone, and everyone's phone charger breaks eventually. If you want competitive prices for these replaceable everyday products, this place has what you need.
Steak (and Stinky Tofu) 牛排和臭豆腐
Stinky tofu and steak sold at the same location. What a combination!
More steak and stinky tofu sold together. A steak here includes soup and perhaps drink, and will set you back about 150 NT.
Also near here are some inexpensive small hot pot restaurants. 22 King - Imported Foods
22 King is a special store on the west side of the night market. It specializes in selling foreign snacks, candy, and drinks. And the stuff is cheap.
Drinks on display in the back.
Specialty candy, like rock shaped candy, sold for 10 NT each.
Kanto Stew 關東煮
As I learned while writing this blog, Kanto Stew (關東煮) originates from Kanto, Japan, but it is a Taiwan staple. You can find it at almost every 7-11 and Family Mart, but you rarely see it sold outside. On the west side of the night market, there is a lady doing just that. And it is amazing.
White raddish, cabbage, tofu, duck blood rice cake, and fish balls. Delicious!
The lady there also gave me a fork because of the color of my skin.
You can find the stall at the intersection of Linjiang Street and Lane 2.
Curry King 咖喱王子
Curry King (咖喱王子) is another chain restaurant in Taiwan that has some of the best curry dishes you can imagine. I first ate at this place in Qijin Old Street and have been in love ever since.
Ice stand next to a clothing shop.
Wulongyuan Pictures and Comics 烏龍院拼圖、壁畫專賣店
Another cool place is Wulongyuan (烏龍院) which sells painting, photos, frames, and comics. I love them because they can make you frames, which can be hard and expensive to get in Taipei.
There are tons of other treats and shops to explore on Tonghua Street Night Market, like this red bean soup stand. Get out there and discover one of the best night markets in Taiwan for yourself!
Also don't forget there is one of the cheapest vegetable and fruit markets here in the morning from about 5 AM to 12 PM.
