Taitung's Haibin Park (literarily Ocean Coastal Park) stretches along the east coast next to downtown Taitung City and includes the nearest beach, as well as bicycle paths, grassy areas, wetlands, and artwork. It is a great place to relax and enjoy ocean views within walking distance of the city center.

Background:
During the Martial law era, this area of shoreline was likely off limits and patrolled by the ROC military watching for a Chinese invasion. Since Martial law has been lifted, the beach area has become a favorite rest area for old Taiwanese men to go fishing in their spare time. Only in the past decade or so has Haibin Park undergone serious development, such as creating bike paths, green areas, and Instagram photo check-in spots. The main feature of the park, Taitung's "Tree of life," which is a small pavilion in the shape of a tree, is considered an international landmark in the park and was created in 2012. 
The park is now popular with both locals and tourists and you can find a lot of people here on weekends, but fewer people the further south you go.​
Up north, you can find Taitung's Forest Park which has a lake that allows swimming and kayaking.

Luye's Longtian Green Tunnel in Taitung County is one of many "green tunnels" in Taiwan, made up of a row of trees on either side of a road making a tunnel of leaves, which to locals is kind of a rare sight. The tunnel attracts many cyclists and Instagrammers year-round. 

Background:
There is really not any history to tell. Obviously, the trees along the road have been around a long time, probably just to provide shade. What probably happened was some people from Taipei came and thought that a road with trees next to it looked unique, and decided to bring their friends here to take photos. Now it has become kind of a viral location.
There is another green tunnel in Luye called Wuling Green Tunnel (武陵綠色隧道), which is north of the highland. 

How to get there:
By Car: From Taipei, take National Highway 5 to Yilan, then drive south on provincial road 9 until you get to Luye. See the map below for the location of the Highlands. Su'ao's Crayon Castle (officially Luck Arts Crayon Factory) is a crayon factory castle in Su'Ao township in Yilan County, that has been specifically designed as a DIY experience center for kids where they can make their own arts and crafts, as well as their own set of markers, and crayon in the shape of Taiwan! The DIY activities include making markers and crayons, face painting, painting porcelain, making chalk, and water coloring. Basically, it is a paradise for young children. 

Background:
The Lucky Art corporation started in Yilan in 1990, and has four factories worldwide, two in Taiwan, and one in Shanghai and Vietnam. 
The factory in Yilan produces over 1.5 million crayons per day.
In 2008, the Lucky Art corporation opened its tourist crayon factory, which now sees more than 200,000 visitors per year. 
In 2017, the crayon castle was expanded to double its size, and added a parking lot that can accommodate over 200 cars.

Hualien‘s Dongdamen Night Market is the largest night market in Eastern Taiwan. It is actually four night markets in one. The night market lies on the spot of a former train station, and is also connected to the beach via pedestrian bridge. Popular delicacies here include fried chicken, shish kabab, coffin bread, and braised duck head. 

Background:
Dongdamen gets it's name because it lies on the east side of the city, literally meaning "east gate" however Hualien has never had walls or gates. 
Dongdamen Night Market was formed in 2015 over the site of the former Hualien TRA train station. The Night Market features four night markets in one: Fuding Night Market, Aborigine Street, Gesheng Street, and Ziqiang Night Market.  The night market has over 400 stalls and sees over 200,000 visitors per month.

Hualien is great year round, but it can get a little hot in the summer, and Typhoon season and heavy rain season last from about May to October. If you are afraid of the heat and rain then you can visit during winter when the temperatures are mild and the climate is usually dryer.

The Taitung White House is a strange-looking house built by hand by a former KMT soldier. It's a popular location and you can usually spot an Instagrammer or two here taking photos of the oddly shaped house, which reminds people of Howl's Moving House.

Historical Background:
​The Taitung White House began construction in 1966 by Li Wenchang (李文昌), who was an ROC soldier born in 1928 in Guangxi and moved with the ROC army to Taiwan during the Chinese Civil War. He built the house while he was still serving in the military. Originally the house was made of wood, then he added brick to the walls. After a local coast guard station was abandoned in 1970, he moved the materials from the coast guard station over to build his house into the four-story building we see today. 
Mr. Li had a son who later went on to become an Architect, and urged him to move to Kaohsiung in his old age, but Mr. Li refused this offer. 
In 2015 a nearby animal feed factory was torn down to make way for a hotel being built here, making the white house much more obvious to passersby. 
Mr. Li still lived at the house and was a bit of a recluse but still agreed to interviews from the media. He rejected offers from others to purchase the property. 
Mr. Li finally died in his home at the age of 89 in 2017. ​

As of the time of this article, the White House is still standing and there are no plans to sell it or tear it down that I am aware of. It is still a popular attraction in Taitung.

Liyu Lake is a scenic lake in Hualien. Here you can paddle across the lake, or take a scenic bike ride around the shore. There is also many food options here. It is like the Sun Moon Lake of eastern Taiwan.

Background:
Liyu literally means carp, so named because there are many carp fish in the lake. Therefore it is also known as Carp Lake.
Liyu is the largest lake in Hualien.
During Taiwan's logging days, an old logging railroad track (Halun Forest Railway 哈崙森林鐵路)
ran through this area, and parts of it can be seen nearby.
In 2002, the area around the lake was proposed as a scenic tourist area. In 2014, completion on the area was finished, which included a bike path, visitor's center, bus routes, and a pier.

When to go:
On a sunny dry day. The rocks can get slippery and a fall on some of the trails could kill you. But if you are careful and bring proper hiking boots and gear, hiking on a wet day should be fine. 
Avoid typhoons and heavy rains at all costs. There gorge will close during typhoons anyway.
Typhoon season lasts from May to October. Other than that, this hike is great year round.

Dongshan Mountain above the east coast in Hualien provides amazing 360 degree views of Hualien City, the central mountain range, and the east coast. You can also find Farglory's Hotel and Fargolry Ocean Park here. It is worth a visit if you have time.

Background:
Farglory Hotel in Hualien has 381 rooms and was completed in 2005. It sits 200 meters above sea level and looks over the east coast and Hualien City, and is less than 1 KM away from Farglory Ocean Park. It is the only hotel to be listed on a stock exchange in Taiwan.
Farglory Ocean Park was the first marine theme park constructed in Taiwan, and was completed in 2002. The area is 51 hectares and features a theme park and an aquarium. It includes roller coasters, a Ferris wheel, waterpark, dolphin shows, aquarium, restaurants and other events and shows.

Baiyang Falls are a beautiful set of waterfalls in Taroko National Park. The trail is only 2 KM long and is flat and paved with no steps. It is an easy and relaxing way to enjoy some of the best scenery in the park. 

Background:
Taroko National Park is well known for its  marble cliffs and canyons, and is also known as "The Marble Gorge." Millions of years ago, the rock we see today was sediment at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, but oceanic and tectonic pressure turned it into limestone, and later into marble. Later the Eurasian plate was uplifted where Taiwan is today, and a gorge was cut out of the limestone thanks to the Liwu River. 

Taroko means "human being," from the Truku tribal language. Originally the Tupido Tribe settled in the area of what is now Tianxiang Taiti mesa. They built the Tupido Tribe Trail which was only 30 cm wide, and resided there until they were massacred by the Japanese in 1914. In 1917, the Japanese expanded the original trail made by the Tupido Tribe to 1.5 M and forced aboriginal tribesmen to carry goods along the trail to the east coast. This is now the Zhuilu Old Trail. Currently only 3km of the trail is open to the public. The Japanese created a national park in the Area in 1937, which was disestablished by the ROC in 1945, and then reinstated in as a national park in 1986.

The road to Baiyang Waterfall was created by the Taipower Company in an effort to build a hydropower reservoir in Taroko Gorge. However the project was not completed, to protect the natural scenery in the area. The roads and tunnels left over from the project now make up the current trail, to what would normally be an arduous hike through impossible terrain. 
Baiyang Waterfall is 220 meters high, and the highest waterfall in Taiwan to fall off one sheer cliff.

Emerald Valley is a popular river tracing spot near in Xiulin Township of Hualien County. It is also home to the Emerald Valley Old Trail, a trail used by Taroko Aborigines and Japanese to connect to Taiwan's central mountain range. The Dam, tunnel, and suspension bridge here are all remnants from the Japanese era.

Background:
Emerald Valley Old Trail dates back to over 200 years ago and was used by the Taroko tribe to travel deep into the Taiwan's central mountain range, along the Mugua river. During the Japanese control of Taiwan after 1895, the Japanese built a bridge, tunnel, and waterworks here and mined copper, and set up an artillery shelter, among other things. 
The area has been basically untouched since the Japanese era, and now a popular hiking trail connects the tunnels to the made made waterfall and river tracing valley beyond.

Hualien is great year round, but it can get a little hot in the summer, and Typhoon season and heavy rain season last from about May to October. If you are afraid of the heat and rain then you can visit during winter when the temperatures are mild and the climate is usually dryer. 

Where to stay?
Most of the accommodation you will find is near the city center.  If you only want to visit Hualien City and Taroko Gorge, you can consider booking a hotel near downtown, walking or cycling around the city, and taking a bus to Taroko Gorge.

Nanfang'ao is the third-largest fishing harbor in Taiwan and is an important part of the local economy. Just above the harbor along the Suhua highway is an amazing lookout that gives a 180-degree view of southern Yilan, Su'ao, and the surrounding area. It is definitely worth a stop on your next trip to the east coast of Taiwan. ​

Background:
The first path between Su'ao and Hualien was a trail built in the Qing Dynasty that was completed in 1876, for the Qing to better control aboriginal peoples on the east coast. Later after Japan took control of Taiwan, they widened the path and built 9 bridges and 14 tunnels along the way, making it drivable for cars (one way only) by 1932. Because much of the road was next to cliffs that underwent constant landslides, it was considered one of the most dangerous roads in the world at the time. In the 1980s the ROC government further widened the road, and the two-lane highway was completed in 1990. In 2020, the section of road between Su'ao and Dong'ao was bypassed by a tunnel. ​

By Car/Scooter: From Su'ao or Dong'ao, take Highway 9 east along the coast. The Suhua Highway Monument (蘇花公路安魂碑) and nearby Kailu Xianfengye Temple (開路先鋒爺廟) commemorate the 13 workers who died building the road from Su'ao to Hualien from 1932 to the present. It sits on one of the most scenic viewpoints of the highway between Su'ao and Dong'ao, overlooking Dong'ao Bay. It is definitely worth a stop on your next trip to the east coast of Taiwan.

Kailu Xianfengye Temple was erected in 1994 near the Suhua Highway Monument to honor the thirteen lives that were lost during the construction of the Su'hua highway (two during the Japanese era and 11 during the ROC era). Shanling Haowangjiao Hostel in Hualien is a small hostel on top of a mountain above the east coast in Hualien. In provides amazing 360 degree views of Hualien City, the central mountain range, and the east coast, as well as a bunch of themed props to take selfies with. It is worth a visit if you have time.

Background:
Shanling Haowangjiao Hostel has 4 rooms. It is a unique hostel in Taiwan because basically they charge you to look at the view, and provide some snacks. I have never been to any place like it before.

How to get around in Hualien:
As always, we recommend renting a scooter as the best way to see Taiwan. However, you can also a great deal of Tainan by taking the train, inter-city bus, local bus, biking, or just walking. Getting around in a car is also a convenient option as there is plenty of parking pretty much everywhere in this less crowded county.

Su'Ao's Neipi Beach in the Nanfangao area (Yilan County) is perhaps the most beautiful beach in northeast Taiwan. It is known for its romantic atmosphere and large waves, which attract surfers from all around. Popular activities here include surfing, kite surfing, kayaking, scuba diving, hiking, and watching the sunrise. 

Background:
The area around Neipi Beach is known as Nanfangao, or southern Su'Ao. Nanfangao Harbor is the third largest in Taiwan, attracting many tourists to its fish markets, and sits right next to Neipi Beach. Su'Ao is an important link between Eastern Taiwan and Northern Taiwnan. National Freeway 5 ends here, and the Suhua Highway begins here, connecting Yilan to Hualien. 
On October 1st, 2019 the Nafangao Cross Harbor Bridge suddenly collapsed, killing 6 and injuring 12. Currently there are plans for reconstruction. The cause of the bridge collapse is still under investigation, but is likely due to corrosion of the supporting cables. 

Due to fierce undercurrents, it is highly advised that you use caution while performing water sports in the area.

How to get there:
By Car: Take National Freeway No. 3 and transfer to National Freeway No. 5. Take the highway to the very end and you will arrive in Su'Ao. You will need to travel to the very end of Nafangao Harbor and drive around it as the cross harbor bridge has collapsed. 
By Bus: There are buses that leave hourly from Taipei Main Station to Su'Ao. The journey takes about 2 hours. 
By Train: Take the train to Su'Ao Station, then walk or take a taxi the remaining 2-3 km to the beach.
